Steam Machine
What it is, what it can do and where it stops. If it turns out not to be for you, there are two other ways to get the same SteamOS under your TV.
What is the Steam Machine?
Valve’s own living room box: semi-custom AMD hardware, SteamOS out of the box, Big Picture the second you turn it on. Two models, storage being the only difference.
| CPU | Semi-custom Zen 4, 6 cores / 12 threads |
|---|---|
| GPU | RDNA3, 28 CU, 110W (about a mobile RX 7600) |
| Memory | 16GB |
| Storage | 512GB or 2TB, microSD slot |
| Target | 4K/60 with FSR upscaling |
Price and availability
Valve sells the Steam Machine itself. Check the Steam store for the current price, the available models and whether you can order one.
Steam Machine or your own PC?
The Steam Machine is a plug-and-play, console-style PC that Valve supports itself. Its GPU is soldered, so it is the machine you keep as-is, while a PC you build or buy elsewhere can be upgraded part by part.
Prefer your own hardware? Build your own or buy a prebuilt and install the same official SteamOS.
What can you upgrade in the Steam Machine?
Storage and memory are open. The GPU is soldered to the board, so frame rate is fixed for the life of the machine.
After an SSD swap you do a clean SteamOS install from a USB stick. The steps are the same as any install.
Common Steam Machine repairs
Replacement parts for the most common faults.
Warranty. Opening the machine may affect it. The community advice is to keep the original parts so you can put it back the way it came.
Not the machine for you?
The same official SteamOS runs on hardware you pick yourself, often for less.
